Advancements in composite decking technology are transforming the way outdoor spaces are designed and built, particularly in multifamily settings where effective water management is critical. This course introduces mineral-based composite decking systems and their role in eliminating the need for secondary membranes. Learners will explore how these all-in-one solutions streamline installation, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and help prevent common issues such as mold, decay, and water intrusion. The course also highlights how well-designed outdoor amenities can foster social connection, support resident well-being, and enhance the value of shared spaces.

Architectural metal products play a critical role in both exterior and interior applications by balancing aesthetics, performance, safety, durability, and sustainability. This course examines specialty metal products commonly used in architectural design and how material selection, construction type, and finishes impact long-term performance. The course explores suitable applications and design considerations for wire mesh, perforated and expanded metal, textured metal, and bar and plank grating, empowering designers to make informed material selections.

As urban development encroaches upon natural habitats, human–wildlife conflicts, particularly those involving bears, have become more frequent and dangerous. This course will equip architects and designers with the knowledge and tools to mitigate bear–human conflicts through wildlife-resistant waste management and food storage systems. The course examines how bears become conditioned to human food and how this impacts humans, bears, and the environment. Learners will gain insights into how community strategies and innovative product designs can foster safer, more sustainable human–wildlife coexistence.

Today’s gas fireplaces make a stylish, modern design statement while providing a safe and efficient option for supplemental heat. This course explores the benefits of direct vent, electronic ignition gas fireplaces over other fuel and venting options, with a focus on the innovative features and design possibilities offered by frameless fireplaces suitable for any residential or commercial space. The benefits of a frameless fireplace design, cool wall technology, a heat control system, and integration of the modern fireplace into a home automation system are discussed, and occupant safety features such as double glass heat safety barriers are explained.

This course provides architects and designers with a comprehensive understanding of the transformative potential of modern gas fireplaces in contemporary design. It covers key technologies such as direct vent systems, frameless designs, natural heat release systems, and heat control innovations. Participants will recognize how to incorporate fireplaces as both functional heating solutions and architectural design elements. The course also reviews important safety features, including double-glass heat barriers, to ensure compliance with modern standards.

Modular systems are designed around individual components that can be joined together to configure a seamless and personalized space solution. This course discusses the key design principles and benefits of modular design along with strategies for successfully incorporating modularity into a bathroom design.

Modular metal panel (MMP) wall systems allow for an array of different exterior and interior building designs due to their wide range of panel sizes, planes, and layout configurations. This course covers the attributes of MMPs, including the available substrates, their fabrication and ease of installation, and their ability to deliver a simple, constructible concealed-fastener rainscreen system.

Kitchens have evolved, and so has the role of refrigeration in the home; there are a variety of factors that are contributing to this change. This course examines the social, economic, and demographic trends that are stimulating the reimagining of the kitchen space. The latest trends in kitchen design are discussed as is the role of modular refrigeration—a key design element in the creation of functional spaces that reflect the changing domestic landscape.

Rain control is a critical aspect of building envelope construction, affecting a building’s structural integrity and occupant health. This course presents the rainscreen wall system as an effective strategy for moisture management, as reflected in the WELL Building Standard™ version 2. Discussed are the fundamentals of moisture control in buildings, the history of rainscreens, rainscreen design principles, and cladding material selection, including potential contributions to credit achievement in the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C) rating system.

The durability of a home is affected by how well it is protected from moisture. This course reviews the methods of preventing and managing moisture in walls, the installation considerations of moisture management products, and the required tests and acceptance criteria for water-resistive barriers.

Movable pool and spa floor technology enables an entirely flexible, multifunctional living and recreational space to complement any architectural vision. Presented here are types of movable pool floors, pool floor technology, options and amenities, and safety and sustainability performance considerations.

This introductory course is designed to educate all attendees on the most common types and configurations of multifamily buildings. In addition, each attendee will gain access to common manufacturing details associated with multifamily work and how to properly size engineered wood products. Two methods of design are reviewed using specific manufacturer literature and software that is available from all manufacturers and third-party sources.

While exotic, tropical hardwoods provide beauty and durability as materials for outdoor decks, they are expensive to maintain and come with concerns about their sustainability and the effects of harvesting on ecosystems. Multilayer, cellular PVC decking products combine the desired durability and look of hardwoods but utilize a more sustainable production process to create materials that are easier to maintain.

Play and music are both essential parts of our lives. When we can combine music and play together in a fun and engaging space, the benefits are numerous, no matter your age. This course discusses why play and music education perform such a critical role in the development of happy, healthy children. We’ll discuss the copious amounts of research that tell us that music education has real-life benefits, such as increased IQ, language development, and social engagement, and the role music plays within multiple therapies for the elderly and those suffering from mental illnesses. The course finishes with an overview of how to design musical play spaces for safety and inclusivity. 

One of the most important concepts behind biophilia is the “urge to affiliate with other forms of life” (E.O. Wilson). Humans are connected to nature, inspired by nature, and desire to be harmonized with nature. This course discusses the main principles of biophilic design and explains how a connection with nature benefits human well-being, increases classroom performance, and reduces stress. Multiple case studies demonstrating the positive benefits of daylight and views on building occupants are discussed, and applications of biophilic design are examined.
