  • Course description: ECSH - Specifying Solid Lumber

This course equips architects, designers and millworkers to write clearer solid lumber specifications. Using a four-part decision framework; appearance, performance, availability and material investment. The session covers measurement and dimension language, grades, cuts, colour sorting and species selection for architectural hardwood and softwood millwork. Participants leave with a practical specification checklist to confirm species, grade, cut, colour sort, finished dimensions and milling detail before issuing a specification.

    1) Apply a four-part decision framework (appearance, performance, availability, material investment) to guide solid lumber specification decisions for architectural millwork.

    2) Distinguish between nominal and actual dimensions, and correctly interpret units of measure (board foot, lineal foot, square foot) and rough thickness terminology (4/4, 8/4, etc.) when writing or reviewing specifications.

    3) Differentiate hardwood and softwood grading systems, sawing methods (flat, quarter, rift) and colour sorting terminology to match material selection to project appearance and performance requirements.
