  • Course description: AEC Daily: Innovation, Premium Design, & Comfort with Fabric Screens & Awnings

Maximizing natural daylight inside buildings boosts occupant health and well-being and reduces reliance on electric lighting, but the challenge is to maintain a comfortable environment free from glare and heat buildup. This course explores exterior fabric shading solutions that can reduce solar heat gain, maintain privacy and views, and contribute toward energy savings, daylighting, and shading goals in the WELL Building Standard™ v2, the Sustainable SITES Initiative® v2, and the LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction and Interior Design and Construction rating systems. Awnings and screens combining minimalist design with innovative technology are reviewed, along with the myriad customization options to meet functional and aesthetic goals across a range of project types.

Discuss the benefits of daylight for energy efficiency and occupant health, well-being, and productivity in residential, commercial, education, hospitality, parks and recreation, and healthcare settings.

Recall the considerations required to ensure that daylight is managed so as not to negatively impact energy use or occupant comfort while providing benefits that meet LEED, WELL, and SITES requirements for sustainable design.

Describe the benefits of fabric shading devices installed on the building exterior and the options for screen and awning styles, configurations, and installation and operational technologies.

Explain how to select the correct motors, controls, and fabrics to ensure the shading device meets project requirements for balancing thermal and visual comfort to support energy efficiency and occupant well-being.
