Course Description: Marwood: The use of PEFC and SFI certified Wood Siding to promote public Health, Safety and Welfare
Forest certification identifies land that is managed with a goal of sustainability. Products certified to these standards practice climate-smart forestry, and support relationship building with Indigenous Peoples. This course focuses on wood siding manufacture and sustainability and has been designed to give Architects/Designers a deeper appreciation of how specifying PEFC and SFI certified wood siding and shingles affects Public Health, Safety and Welfare. Ultimately supporting responsible and sustainable forest management practices.
Understand the lab testing procedures required to receive PEFC and SFI certifications and how these certifications ensure the public that the benefits and functions of the forest, including clean air and water, wildlife and plant habitat, soil health, and recreation, are maintained or protected during management and harvest.
Gain an overview of key environmental benefits when specifying products sustainably harvested from PEFC and SFI certified forests in British Columbia.
Understand how wood siding and shingles are manufactured and why they may be considered sustainable, environmentally supportive products.
Discover the different types of wood substrates that can be used in making wood siding as well as shingles and identify the different profiles and the aesthetics of each substrate.
