  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Noise Walls of the Future

Explore how environmental noise impacts public health and community well-being, and review effective noise-mitigation strategies using recycled-material barrier systems. This course discusses how sound behaves in the built environment and how recycled-plastic noise walls reduce carbon emissions, divert waste from landfills, and contribute to sustainability outcomes recognized by LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C), SITES® v2, and broader infrastructure sustainability frameworks such as Envision®.

Describe the health and environmental impacts of noise on communities and explain how noise‑mitigation design strategies, such as recycled‑material noise barriers, help improve occupant well‑being.

Discuss how noise‑barrier geometry, placement, and material performance (including STC and NRC ratings) contribute to noise reduction.

Identify how incorporating recycled polymers into noise‑mitigation infrastructure reduces carbon emissions, supports circular‑economy material strategies, and contributes to sustainability goals across rating systems such as LEED, SITES, and Envision.

Apply customizable surface designs, transparency options, and context‑sensitive aesthetics to support equitable access, community identity, and improved public‑realm experience.
