  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Designing for Water Conservation: Water-Efficient Plumbing Solutions

Water is a valuable resource, yet many states suffer water shortages due to preventable issues, such as overuse and leaks. This course presents the increased need for water conservation and provides an overview of the EPA’s WaterSense® program. Examined are how plumbing fixtures can meet the requirements of green building codes, standards, and rating systems, including LEED® v5 Building Design and Construction (BD+C). Healthcare, institutional, and residential case studies demonstrate the benefits of water-efficient plumbing fixtures.

Identify the primary drivers of increasing water demand and the environmental impacts of reservoirs and explain how conservation strategies can reduce reliance on reservoirs and costly supply‑expansion projects.

Describe the WaterSense program, certification process, and performance requirements for standard plumbing fixtures.

Recall how WaterSense-labeled fixtures may support compliance with the water-efficiency requirements of CALGreen, Green Globes®, BREEAM In-Use, and LEED v5.

Discuss how plumbing fixture technologies and management tools reduce water flow, prevent or minimize water waste, and improve hygiene.

Utilize case studies to inspire the specification of plumbing products that reduce water use, manufacturing waste, and replacement and energy costs and comply with hygiene, drinkability, low-lead, and ADA standards.
